San Diego is what happens when perfect weather, incredible food, beautiful beaches, and a laid-back culture all come together in one place. Sitting at the very southwestern tip of the continental United States, just minutes from the Mexican border, this city has an easygoing energy that’s infectious from the moment you arrive. People actually seem happy here, and after a few days in San Diego, I understood why — when you have 266 sunny days a year and fish tacos this good, life just hits different 🇺🇸🏄.
I drove down from Los Angeles on the I-5, a scenic 2-hour drive along the coast. San Diego’s downtown is surprisingly compact and walkable, centered around the Gaslamp Quarter — a 16-block historic district of restored Victorian buildings now packed with restaurants, rooftop bars, craft breweries, and live music venues. The energy at night, especially on weekends, is fantastic without being overwhelming 🏙️.
Getting There & First Impressions
Balboa Park was my first major stop and it blew me away. This 1,200-acre urban park (larger than Central Park) is home to 17 museums, the world-famous San Diego Zoo, gorgeous gardens, performing arts venues, and stunning Spanish Colonial Revival architecture built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. I spent an entire day here and barely scratched the surface. The San Diego Zoo alone, home to over 12,000 animals representing 650 species in beautifully designed habitats, is worth the trip to San Diego by itself 🦁.
The beaches in San Diego are extraordinary. La Jolla Cove was my favorite — a small, sheltered beach with crystal-clear water, sea lions sunning on the rocks, and some of the best snorkeling in California. The La Jolla Underwater Park is a marine reserve, and swimming with leopard sharks, garibaldi fish, and sea turtles in the kelp forests just offshore was magical. Coronado Beach, with its wide golden sand and the iconic Hotel del Coronado (a Victorian beach resort from 1888 where Marilyn Monroe filmed Some Like It Hot) in the background, is consistently ranked among the best beaches in America 🏖️.
Top Highlights & Must-See Spots
The food scene in San Diego is anchored by two things: Mexican food and craft beer. The city’s proximity to Tijuana means the Mexican food here is exceptional — fish tacos (San Diego claims to have invented the California-style fish taco) at spots like Tacos El Gordo and Oscar’s Mexican Seafood were revelatory. Battered, fried fish with cabbage, crema, and a squeeze of lime in a warm tortilla for $3 — pure perfection. Birria tacos, California burritos (with fries inside — a San Diego invention), and carne asada fries round out the essential eating 🌮.
San Diego is also the craft beer capital of America, with over 150 breweries in the county. I did a self-guided tour through the North Park and Hillcrest neighborhoods, where craft breweries are on practically every block. The IPAs here — hop-forward West Coast style — are some of the best in the world. Stone Brewing, Modern Times, and Societe were my favorites 🍺.
The USS Midway Museum — a retired aircraft carrier permanently docked in San Diego Bay — was a fascinating visit. Walking the flight deck, sitting in the cockpit of fighter jets, and exploring the labyrinth of below-deck compartments where 4,500 sailors once lived gave me a real appreciation for naval life. The audio tour, narrated by actual Midway sailors, was excellent ⚓.
More Things to See & Do
I also explored Old Town San Diego, the site of the first European settlement on the West Coast and now a state historic park preserving the city’s Mexican and early American heritage. The free museums, historic adobe buildings, and the best tamales and churros I had in California made it a worthwhile visit. Little Italy downtown, once a working-class Italian fishing neighborhood, has evolved into one of the trendiest dining and shopping districts in the city 🏘️.
Final Thoughts
San Diego’s magic is in its effortless livability. It’s not trying to impress you — it just genuinely is that beautiful, that delicious, and that relaxed. It’s the kind of city that makes you start checking real estate listings, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment ❤️.
