Los Angeles is a city that’s impossible to understand from a distance. People say it’s shallow, sprawling, car-dependent, and fake. And from the outside looking in, I almost believed them. But after spending time actually exploring LA โ not just the tourist highlights but the neighborhoods, the food, the art, the mountains, the beaches โ I discovered a city of extraordinary depth, diversity, and creative energy that no other place in the world can match ๐บ๐ธ๐ฌ.
I flew into LAX and, yes, you need a car in LA. The city sprawls across 1,300 square kilometers, and while the Metro is improving, a rental car or rideshares are essential. But here’s what nobody tells you: driving in LA isn’t just transportation โ it’s part of the experience. Cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway with the windows down, palm trees lining the road, and the Pacific Ocean glittering beside you is the most Californian thing imaginable ๐ด.
Getting There & First Impressions
I started in Hollywood, and I’ll be honest โ the Walk of Fame and Hollywood Boulevard are pretty underwhelming. The real Hollywood magic is elsewhere: the Griffith Observatory, perched in the hills above the city, offers free admission and the most iconic view of the Hollywood Sign with the LA skyline spread out below and, on clear days, the Pacific Ocean in the distance. I went at sunset and the city transformed from golden to glittering as millions of lights switched on across the basin. The observatory’s telescopes (also free) let you look at planets and stars, making it one of the best free attractions in any city ๐ญ.
The Getty Center was my cultural highlight โ a campus of travertine buildings designed by Richard Meier perched on a hilltop in Brentwood. The art collection (Impressionists, photographs, decorative arts) is excellent, but the architecture and gardens are equally stunning. You reach it by a free tram that climbs the hillside, and the views from the garden terrace โ the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the sprawling city below โ are spectacular. Entry and parking are free (parking reservation required) ๐จ.
Top Highlights & Must-See Spots
Venice Beach was a sensory explosion โ bodybuilders at Muscle Beach, skateboarders at the famous skatepark, street performers, artists, drum circles, and the iconic Venice Beach Boardwalk with its colorful stalls and characters. The Venice Canals just blocks away are a peaceful surprise โ actual canals lined with eclectic homes, arched bridges, and ducks, dating back to the neighborhood’s founding in 1905 as an imitation of Venice, Italy. Santa Monica Pier, with its famous Ferris wheel and Route 66 endpoint sign, was the perfect place to watch the sunset ๐๏ธ.
LA’s food scene is one of the best and most diverse in the world. The Grand Central Market downtown is a century-old food hall with vendors serving everything from handmade pupusas to Thai boat noodles to gourmet egg sandwiches. The taco scene in LA is legendary โ street tacos from trucks in East LA, Oaxacan mole in Koreatown, and birria tacos dipped in consommรฉ that changed my understanding of what a taco could be. LA’s Korean food (the city has the largest Korean population outside Korea) is extraordinary, and a late-night KBBQ session in Koreatown was one of my favorite meals ๐ฎ.
I hiked Runyon Canyon in the Hollywood Hills โ a moderate trail that rewards you with 360-degree views of the city, from downtown skyscrapers to the ocean. LA’s proximity to nature is one of its secret weapons โ within an hour you can be at the beach, in the mountains, or in the desert. The Malibu coastline, with its dramatic cliffs and celebrity-studded beaches, was worth the drive ๐ฅพ.
More Things to See & Do
The arts and culture scene extends far beyond Hollywood. The LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) with Chris Burden’s iconic Urban Light installation (the 202 restored street lamps that have become one of the most photographed spots in LA) is excellent. The Broad museum downtown, with its incredible contemporary art collection (including major works by Koons, Basquiat, Haring, and Kusama’s Infinity Mirrors), is free and stunning ๐ผ๏ธ.
Final Thoughts
LA is sprawling, sun-soaked, diverse, creative, and endlessly surprising. It rewards exploration, patience, and a willingness to look beyond the surface. The city of angels has more soul than its critics give it credit for โค๏ธ.
