Planning a trip to Europe can be thrilling yet overwhelming. With so many countries, cultures, and landmarks to explore, a clear plan ensures you make the most of your adventure. We spent over 2 weeks in Europe, and we researched a lot before going, and we would like to share it with you so that our information will help you to plan smartly. Here are the 10 must-have checklists to guide your European getaway!

1. Set Your Budget

  • Decide on Total Spending: Include flights, accommodation, food, transportation, activities, shopping, and a buffer for emergencies.

  • Track Costs: Use apps like Trail Wallet or Google Sheets to keep tabs on your expenses.

  • Save Smart: Look out for travel deals or off-season discounts.

2. Choose Your Destinations

  • Make a Wish List: Jot down must-visit countries, cities, or landmarks.

  • Prioritize: Consider travel time between locations and focus on regions.

  • Research: Look into visa requirements, local culture, and attractions for each place.

3. Book Flights and Transportation

  • Flights: Use comparison sites like Google Flights, Skyscanner, or Hopper for deals.

  • Trains: Check Eurail or local railway options for intercity travel. If you are traveling for more than 2 weeks, Eurail is recommended since it will cover most of the regions. Also, it will cover some % off major tourist attractions tickets.

  • Public Transport: Research metro passes, buses, or bike rentals for getting around cities. Eurail doesn't cover the public transport inside the city.

4. Secure Accommodations

  • Hotels/Hostels: Look for options on Booking.com, Expedia, or Hostelworld.

  • Vacation Rentals: Explore Airbnb or Vrbo for unique stays.

  • Proximity: Ensure accommodations are near train stations, public transport, or major attractions.

5. Plan Your Itinerary

  • Daily Plan: Allocate time for sightseeing, meals, and relaxation.

  • Flexibility: Leave some buffer time for unplanned activities or delays.

  • Guided Tours: Book tickets in advance for popular attractions to avoid long queues. You can use Get Your Guide or search in Google to buy the tickets.

6. Pack Strategically

  • Essentials: Passport, travel insurance, credit cards, cash, tickets, and itinerary.

  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Layers, comfortable shoes (you will walk a lot), and rain gear.

  • Tech: Universal adapter, portable charger, and camera.

  • Luggage: Use packing cubes to stay organized. Some of the cities in Europe have cobblestone streets, which might cause damage to your luggage, so you can carry a big bag or get durable luggage. If you are visiting a city just for a couple of hours, there are luggage storage counters inside the train stations. You can store your luggage while you explore the city. They will charge around $5-$10 or less per luggage for a day.

7. Sort Out Travel Documents

  • Passport Validity: Ensure it’s valid for at least 6 months after travel.

  • Visas: Research if you need a Schengen visa or specific country permits.

  • Travel Insurance: Opt for coverage that includes medical emergencies and trip cancellations.

8. Understand Currency and Payments

  • Local Currency: Know the currency for each country (Euro, Swiss Franc, etc.).

  • Exchange Rates: Get competitive rates or withdraw from ATMs abroad.

  • Payment Options: Inform your bank about travel and carry a mix of cash and cards. If you are based in the US, check with your credit card for foreign transaction fees. Normally, Chase, American Express, and Capital One credit cards have no foreign transaction fee.

9. Stay Connected

  • International SIM: Get a SIM card for Europe or use eSIM options like Ubigi or Airalo.

  • Wi-Fi: Look for accommodations offering free Wi-Fi or portable hotspots.

  • Apps: Download helpful travel apps:

    Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps

Train Tickets: SBB (for Switzerland), Omio, RainEurope, Trainline, SNCF (France), Trenitalia (Italy), Eurail

    Language translation: Google Translate, Duolingo

Accommodation : Booking.com, Airbnb, Vrbo, Expedia

Tickets for Attractions : GetYourGuide, Viator, Tripadvisor,

10. Health and Safety Precautions

  • Vaccinations: Check requirements or recommendations for Europe.

  • Medication: Carry prescriptions, some liquid IVs, and a basic first-aid kit. There are tons of pharmacies in Europe. You can easily get over-the-counter medicines. But, good to carry some spares.

  • Emergency Numbers: Save local emergency contacts for each country.

  • Local Laws: Familiarize yourself with local customs and laws to avoid issues.
